Swinney Syrah (Formerly Shiraz) 2022

$45.00

Exemplary, stylish and rather Old World, it’s medium to fullish in weight with genuine resemblance to quality St-Joseph. A musky, floral bouquet of cassis, blackberries, redcurrants and cedar/chocolate oak backed by suggestions of baked earth and licorice is lifted by eastern scents of five spice and cinnamon, plus a whiff of potpourri. There’s a hint of menthol as well. Long and layered, with a generous, gravelly palate, it’s dry and textural, with a lingering savoury finish. If you’re drinking it young, give it plenty of aeration first.

Winery

Matt Swinney heads a family-owned and operated vineyard of 220 ha that largely sells its fruit to a large number of Western Australian producers. The Swinney label is reserved for small runs of distinctively different fruit, including dry-grown bush-vine grenache and mourvèdre which are turned into wine by Robert Mann, one of WA's leading makers. The vineyard's ironstone gravel soils produce remarkable flavours, ferrous minerality and perfume which help stand the Swinney wines apart from others in the region. Aside from its excellent Riesling, the Swinney label features a collection of red wines from several Rhone varieties, plus the occasional Mencia. The flagship Farvie wines are a selection from the best portions of the vineyard and have quickly emerged as some of the finest releases yet from Western Australia.
